Preparing for your Newborn Photoshoot

Updated: Oct 9, 2018

Since becoming a Newborn Photographer one of the most common questions I get asked is ‘What do I need to do to prepare for my Newborn Photoshoot?’

As parents we want to get the most out of our Photoshoots and be able to capture our precious little ones every feature so we can look back and remember them as they once were.

Preparation is key to a successful photoshoot for both the parents and myself; the photographer.

My Preparation

In order for me to produce the best possible images I plan plan, plan and then plan some more.

When booking a family in for a Newborn Photography Session getting the date set in stone is pretty much impossible, as we know babies come when they choose not when it is convenient for us. I usually roughly pencil in a date 1 week from the due date and then I keep in touch with the expectant parents as this gets nearer.

I ask parents if they know whether they are having a boy or a girl … or more than one! If the gender is unknown that is totally fine – we all like a surprise and I can happily wait until Baby is born to plan my set and outfits.

I like to choose the outfits for Baby along with complimenting wraps, backdrops and props.

We all love a prop but obviously using several would hugely unsettle Baby – I need to get just the right balance of beanbag poses and props with a workflow that will have the least disruption.

Finally, the day before a Newborn Photography Session I message the parents to reconfirm their booking just as a gentle reminder – as I know all too well when we have a Newborn baby all days merge into one and most of the time we don’t know if we are coming or going.

Parents Preparation – My top 4 Tips

1- Bring Baby hungry – I know this is difficult to do as Newborns feed in irregular patterns / cluster feed at first (especially when breastfeeding) but try as hard as you can to bring them ready for a feed. This way we can get them all snuggy and wrapped up for the feed so when they nod off we aren’t disturbing them again to redress them.

2- Bring supplies – for both Baby and yourselves. The Newborn Photography Sessions can take up to 3 hours so bring enough bottles / nappies /Dummies (a couple at least in case any get dropped to save time sterilizing) and snacks to keep you all going. I will be more than happy to play at Tea / Coffee lady though so don’t worry about bringing a flask!!

3- Dress yourselves in layers – During the session we need to get the studio very warm for Baby so be ready to strip off! Don’t forget to plan your outfit either if you are getting in on some of the images – some parents like to wear complimenting colours / muted tones.

4- Enjoy it! If you are anxious about ANY part of the session share your concerns with me and I will talk you through it. I want you to look back with fond memories of the day – let me do all the hard work and have a little well-deserved break (you can even shoehorn in a snooze if you like!)
